This garden designed for a busy family with young children wraps around the house to form a broadly triangular shape. A new rill and water feature create a focal point viewed from the recently refurbished contemporary glazed kitchen area. To one side of the rill a new lounging area connects the garden at the side of the house to the main space, improving the previous situation where the side was largely unused. A new dining area is tucked out of the way of these main views, and is easily accessible from the house. The existing play equipment is gathered into an area at the back of the garden, and although it can be surveyed from the house, the eye is distracted by the water feature, which becomes the primary focus. Planting design is by Isabel Parker Garden Design.

‘We were introduced to Catriona through our mutual friend Isabel Parker, who designed the planting for us. We are surveyors so we are familiar with the design and construction process and it all went as we would have expected. We liked that Catriona presented layout options to us, then worked through our favourite option to come to a solution that worked for us.  What then surprised me most when the garden was done was what a difference it would make – everything feels calmer. Even in the winter, we spend all our time in the kitchen dining space looking out to the garden – just looking is calming. We all use the garden a lot – the kids are out there all the time. The zoning works well – we like having a separate eating, sitting and play area and the washing line is now tucked away out of site.  It means we use the whole garden now. Even though you can see the play area from the kitchen, the water feature works well to distract from it, it's all anyone coming to visit comments on,  and at night we only light up the things we want to see. Our friend’s four year old looked out when she came round one evening and the lights were all on and told us it looked magical, which was very sweet!’’
