No Fence Front Garden

US$0.00

Ladywell, London

This project for a Danish couple complements the calm and contemporary interior of their home. The brief was to completely reimagine the previous arrangement, which was mainly concrete and grass, with a ramped entrance to the front door, bins placed alongside the ramp and a low concrete boundary wall. A new timber bin store is now zoned alongside the parking space, which now features permeable gravel in a retention grid. This allows a small path and some new elegant stone steps leading to the front door to be lushly planted either side with shade tolerant planting. That planting then forms the boundary to the street to replace the concrete wall, with a large statement evergreen shrub providing privacy from the street. A timber fence to match the bin store forms the side boundary and is planted with a scented climber to greet the visitor. Scented planting features heavily with winter scent provided by the Sarcococca, spring scent provided by the feature Viburnum burkwoodii and Skimmia Kew Green with further scent provided by the Choisya. Plenty of evergreens provide year round interest with touches of white, pale pink and pale blue flower colour popping up throughout spring, summer and autumn.

‘We came to Catriona as she is local, knew what’s around and how we could possibly do something very different. We might be very good at interior design, so we had some ideas of what we wanted to do, but we don’t know much about gardens. Catriona was very good at taking those ideas, and with a couple of proposals turning that into something useful. She was very engaged and good at interpreting what we wanted.  It’s completely transformed now from previously being a wasteland. It’s hard not to smile – hard to take your eyes off it! Before it was the missing link, left over from the old house and now it’s just totally modernised everything. We really enjoy how many people stop to look at the front garden and comment to us on how fabulous it looks’’
